DOM Tube OD Grinding — ASTM A513 Type 5
Precision outside-diameter finishing inquiries for drawn-over-mandrel mechanical tubing, including common 1020 and 1026 grades.
PROCESS & MATERIAL SELECTION
What this grinding request involves
Drawn-over-mandrel (DOM) tubing starts as electric-resistance-welded mechanical tubing and is cold-drawn over a mandrel. It is not seamless. Buyers specify the existing tube OD and wall, the finished ground OD and tolerance, plus any straightness and surface-finish requirements. A cold-drawn surface may already be smooth, but that does not make it a precision-ground OD.
Applications and available processing routes are reviewed against your drawing. A page discussing a material or service does not promise stock availability, a universal tolerance, or acceptance of every tube geometry.
SUPPLY & PROCESSING
Before quoting
Identify the tube or bar construction, exact grade and starting condition. Specify the outside diameter before and after grinding, length, quantity, required surface finish, and straightness or concentricity requirements.
TOP GRADES & STANDARDS
Material grades, product specifications & heat treatment
Examples for purchasing discussion—not blanket claims of availability or certification. Verify the correct ASTM edition, form, ordered condition and mill test report.
| Grade / product | Relevant specification | Supplied / heat-treated condition | Grinding review |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1020 DOM | ASTM A513 Type 5 | As-drawn, stress-relieved or annealed as ordered | Common low-carbon mechanical tube |
| 1026 DOM | ASTM A513 Type 5 | Cold-drawn, stress-relieved or otherwise ordered | Mechanical shaft sleeves, bushings and tube stock |
| Other carbon DOM grades | ASTM A513 per certified purchase order | Specified product condition | Confirm chemistry, tube type and mill test report |
| Seamless alternative (not DOM) | ASTM A519/A519M | As specified | Different product route—not interchangeable without engineering approval |
Material heat treatment, mechanical testing and pressure/structural suitability are governed by the original applicable standard and purchase requirements.
SUPPLIED CONDITION
Heat-treatment conditions to verify
Cold drawing changes strength and residual stress. Stress relief or annealing may be selected by the tube manufacturer or purchasing specification; do not treat all DOM as stress-relieved. If post-draw heat treatment is required, supply the ordered condition, mechanical-property requirements and certification. Grinding is a finishing step, not heat treatment.
If the drawing calls for hardness, tensile properties or treatment after grinding, include it explicitly in the RFQ. Finishing does not itself establish a new certified heat-treated condition.

ENGINEERING & PURCHASING QUESTIONS
Questions buyers ask
Is ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM seamless?
No. DOM tube is produced from welded tube and then cold drawn over a mandrel. Specify ASTM A519 if seamless tube is required.
Does drawing over a mandrel mean the OD is precision ground?
No. Drawing and grinding are different finishing processes; the required final OD and finish should be stated separately.
Can a 1026 DOM tube be ground without affecting the wall?
OD removal reduces wall thickness. We need the starting wall, tolerance and planned stock removal to evaluate minimum-wall compliance.
QUOTE BY GRADE, SIZE & FINISH
Have a tube or oversized bar that needs OD grinding?
Send the material grade and product standard, incoming and finished dimensions, condition, wall or bore details where applicable, length, quantity and any surface, inspection or documentation requirements.
