Common 1018 Carbon Steel Specifications & Heat-Treatment Conditions
| Material | 1018 Carbon Steel |
|---|---|
| Common material standards | ASTM A108 for cold-finished 1018 steel; ASTM A29 for general carbon-bar requirements. |
| Supply / heat treatment | Common cold-finished or annealed condition; limited carburizing/case hardening can be evaluated by engineering. |
| Required rod dimensions | Final outside diameter and limits; length and quantity; straightness and finish requirements if specified. |
Low-carbon 1018 is not normally selected for deep uniform through-hardness.
References are not stock guarantees. Material standards, certification, outsourced heat treatment and final grinding are confirmed by written quote, not assumed from grade name alone.
CARBON & ALLOY STEEL / PRECISION ROD BUYING GUIDE
Low-carbon steel frequently considered for general machine components and cold-finished stock.
1018 Carbon Steel Rod Purchasing Specifications
SAE/AISI 1018; specify ASTM A108 or other applicable bar standard. A purchasing description must also identify whether the order is for raw stock, finished ground bar, or grinding of customer-owned stock. Finished outside diameter is separate from the material grade and is verified by an agreed inspection method.
Condition, Machining and Finishing
State cold-finished versus hot-rolled condition and any machinability or surface requirement.
Grinding allowance and wheel selection depend on incoming bar diameter, condition, length and straightness. If the bar will undergo subsequent heat treatment or plating, coordinate processing sequence and the final diameter acceptance with your engineer.
Typical 1018 Carbon Steel Applications
Pins, guide rods, CNC-turned components and industrial hardware.
End-use suitability depends on the component design, not merely a material name or a polished surface. Drawings should identify functional dimensional limits and related mechanical-property requirements.
Material Selection and Substitution Cautions
A cold-drawn starting rod is not necessarily within the final grinding straightness or roundness limits.

1018 Carbon Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
1018 Carbon Steel Centerless Ground Bar
For 1018 Carbon Steel centerless ground rods and bars, confirm cold-finished versus other supply conditions and final outside-diameter limits for machine-fed bar. See centerless grinding services for the OD finishing route.
1018 Carbon Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
If your RFQ calls for 1018 Carbon Steel TG&P (TGP) or turned, ground and polished bar, 1018 TG&P shaft stock requires defined finished size, straightness and surface roughness, not only nominal rod size. Learn about shafting and bar sourcing and surface polishing.
Centerless-ground material is not necessarily TG&P. Grade, supplied condition, turning requirements, final OD, straightness, finish and availability are confirmed by quotation. Request a quote →
- Material: grade, applicable ASTM/AMS or mill specification, supply condition and certifications.
- Size: finished outside diameter, explicit upper/lower tolerance limits and incoming OD if grinding supplied stock.
- Length and volume: full-bar or cut lengths, cut tolerance, pieces/bars/pounds and shipping destination.
- Acceptance: straightness span/method, roughness, roundness, hardness and lot traceability if required.
Quote Finished Rod Stock or Your Existing Bars
Precision Ground Rods coordinates sourcing and finishing inquiries on a quotation basis. Material supply and processing through centerless OD grinding, straightening, polishing, cutting and packaging are reviewed against your order. We do not guarantee every grade is stocked or that every tolerance is achievable for all diameters and lengths.
