Common W1 Tool Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Material grade | W1 Tool Steel |
|---|---|
| Common tool-steel standard | ASTM A686 for carbon tool steel including W1, as applicable to the exact grade and product. |
| Supply / hardening condition | Annealed starting condition and controlled water quench/temper where specified; distortion risk is significant. |
| Order specifications | Grade, annealed/hardened state, hardness, final OD with tolerances, bar length, total quantity and inspection. |
Water-hardening sections may deform during thermal treatment; finish geometry after heat treatment as required.

WATER-HARDENING CARBON TOOL STEEL / MATERIAL PURCHASING
W1 is a water-hardening carbon tool steel for defined tooling and shop applications.
Buying W1 Tool Steel Precision Ground Rod Stock
ASTM A686 when specified; confirm carbon level. Finished rod stock should be ordered with the same rigor as the material itself. Include the actual stock form, the intended further processing and any certificate or test requirement; designation alone does not define finished dimensional performance.
Condition, Machinability and Hardness
Clarify annealed supply and final quench/temper condition.
The specified heat-treatment path changes hardness, allowable grinding stock, dimensional stability and the quality checks that may be needed. State whether OD finishing is required before or after any aging, hardening or tempering process.
Possible W1 Tool Steel Applications
Machined tooling, precision shop fixtures and wear parts.
Applications shown here are examples of why a buyer may evaluate this steel, not a statement that every use is approved or that this product is in stock.
Production and Inspection Cautions
Water quenching can cause movement/cracking; engineering must plan finishing sequence.
What Your Rod RFQ Should Specify
W1 Tool Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
W1 Tool Steel Centerless Ground Bar
When ordering W1 Tool Steel centerless ground rod or bar, water-hardening W1 needs grade identification and heat-treatment planning before final grinding. Learn more about outside-diameter grinding requirements.
W1 Tool Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For W1 Tool Steel TG&P (TGP) and turned, ground and polished rod inquiries, a W1 TG&P request should clarify whether the bar is annealed, hardened or to be finished after further heat treatment. Review material supply and polishing.
A centerless-ground finish alone does not establish a complete TG&P processing route. Document material condition, OD tolerances, surface finish, straightness, length and inspection on the RFQ. Request pricing →
- Exact grade and material standard: identify product form, condition, chemistry/melt requirements and certification.
- Size: finished rod OD and upper/lower dimensional limits, incoming OD if customer-supplied.
- Geometry: length/cut list, straightness test span, roundness and surface-finish requirement.
- Quantity: units/pounds, delivery schedule and application constraints affecting acceptance.
Ground Rod Supply and Processing
Precision Ground Rods coordinates sourcing and finishing inquiries on a quotation basis. Our team reviews material sourcing and qualified outside-diameter grinding, straightening, polishing, cutting or packaging by grade, hardness, diameter and length.
