MATERIAL STANDARDS / HEAT-TREATMENT CONDITIONS
Common 17-4 PH Stainless Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Grade | 17-4 PH Stainless Steel |
|---|---|
| Common bar specifications | ASTM A564 Type 630 / UNS S17400; AMS 5643 may apply to aerospace-quality bar under specified conditions. |
| Heat-treatment / supply condition | Common conditions: solution-treated Condition A; H900, H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150 and specified double-aging conditions. Confirm exact aging cycle, hardness and delivery state. |
| RFQ dimensions | Finished outside diameter, tolerance limits, length, quantity, straightness, surface finish and certification requirements. |
Precision grinding after aging must account for dimensional change; AMS and ASTM conditions are not automatically interchangeable.
Standards are common purchasing references, not universal material certifications or stock promises. Heat-treatment availability and any outsourced processing require written confirmation; Precision Ground Rods bar grinding and finishing do not constitute an in-house furnace heat-treatment claim.
Material Profile & Purchasing Specifications
17-4 PH • PRECIPITATION HARDENING STAINLESS
17-4 PH ground rod inquiries require the exact condition and mechanical requirements as well as the finished dimensions. Different heat-treatment conditions of this stainless alloy are not interchangeable.
Grade and Purchasing Specifications
- Common designation: Type 630 / 17-4 PH; UNS S17400
- Typical bar standard: ASTM A564, when specified on the drawing or purchase order
- Heat-treatment examples: Condition A, H900, H1025, H1075 and H1150; confirm the required state rather than assuming
- Common application: Qualified precision shafts, fasteners and mechanical components requiring material-specific mechanical properties
Condition Selection Comes Before Grinding
The strength, hardness and ductility of 17-4 PH depend strongly on the heat-treatment condition. Ground rod orders must identify the required condition or the mechanical-property acceptance criteria on the drawing. A diameter achieved in Condition A does not itself verify the properties required in H900 or H1150.
Processing and Inspection Planning
Heat-treatment sequencing, finished OD, long-bar straightness and surface integrity require special attention. Provide whether the finished rod is needed in a specified aged condition, and whether grinding occurs before or after heat treatment. Any magnetic response and corrosion requirements should be evaluated against the designated condition.
Sizing, Grinding and Acceptance Criteria
The nominal rod size is not an inspection tolerance. Give the required finished outside diameter and explicit upper/lower limits; for precision rotating or supported parts, also define straightness by support span and measurement method, along with roundness and roughness if applicable. Availability and manufacturing feasibility must be checked for the exact grade, condition, diameter, length and quantity.
17-4 PH Stainless Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
17-4 PH Stainless Steel Centerless Ground Bar
If you are searching for 17-4 PH Stainless Steel centerless ground rod or bar, the selected aging condition, such as Condition A or an H-series condition, affects when finishing and dimensional inspection should occur. Review centerless grinding services for suitable bar stock and customer-supplied material.
17-4 PH Stainless Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For 17-4 PH Stainless Steel TG&P (TGP) or turned, ground and polished material, a TG&P request must state the required final aging condition and whether turning, grinding and polishing are all needed after thermal processing. Read about shafting and bar sourcing and bar polishing.
Centerless-ground finish and TG&P are not interchangeable specifications. Supply form, process sequence, dimensional tolerances, straightness, surface finish and availability are confirmed for each grade and RFQ. Request a grade-specific quote →
What to Include with an RFQ
- Finished OD and upper/lower tolerance limits; starting OD if processing existing stock
- Bar length or cut length, quantity and required length tolerance
- Condition, material standard, certifications and traceability needs
- Straightness, finish and other inspection criteria tied to an agreed test method
- Ship-to destination, packaging requirements, requested lead time and drawings where applicable
