MATERIAL STANDARDS / HEAT-TREATMENT CONDITIONS
Common 1045 Carbon Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Grade | 1045 Carbon Steel |
|---|---|
| Common bar specifications | ASTM A29 for general carbon steel bar; ASTM A108 for cold-finished bar where applicable; SAE/AISI 1045 grade designation. |
| Heat-treatment / supply condition | May be supplied as-rolled, cold-finished, normalized, annealed or quenched-and-tempered depending on size and order. |
| RFQ dimensions | Finished outside diameter, tolerance limits, length, quantity, straightness, surface finish and certification requirements. |
For shafting, state hardness/condition and finished OD separately; grade name alone does not specify mechanical properties.
Standards are common purchasing references, not universal material certifications or stock promises. Heat-treatment availability and any outsourced processing require written confirmation; Precision Ground Rods bar grinding and finishing do not constitute an in-house furnace heat-treatment claim.
Material Profile & Purchasing Specifications
1045 CARBON STEEL • PRECISION GROUND ROUND
1045 medium-carbon steel ground rods support general mechanical shafting and machined parts when finish diameter, straightness and material condition are specified with the order.
Grade and Purchasing Specifications
- Common designation: AISI/SAE 1045 medium-carbon steel
- Typical bar specification: ASTM A29 is a common reference when required; confirm standards and mill certification per order
- Material condition: Hot-rolled, cold-finished, normalized or other ordered condition may affect process and final properties
- Typical use: Machined shaft stock, pins and general mechanical components with engineering-approved loads
Why 1045 Rod Stock Is Specified
1045 is often considered for parts requiring a medium-carbon material rather than the lower-carbon chemistry of 1018. It is not a direct replacement for alloy grades such as 4140 when hardenability or specific mechanical properties are essential. The quoted product should identify whether the grade is supplied as finished ground bar or customer material is being processed.
Straightness and Long-Bar Handling
Long 1045 rods can show deviation from straightness if incoming condition, processing and handling are not controlled. Define support spacing, measuring method and allowed result on the purchase order; an ambiguous requirement such as “straight within commercial tolerance” is unlikely to be adequate for precision bar-fed machinery.
Sizing, Grinding and Acceptance Criteria
The nominal rod size is not an inspection tolerance. Give the required finished outside diameter and explicit upper/lower limits; for precision rotating or supported parts, also define straightness by support span and measurement method, along with roundness and roughness if applicable. Availability and manufacturing feasibility must be checked for the exact grade, condition, diameter, length and quantity.
1045 Carbon Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
1045 Carbon Steel Centerless Ground Bar
If you are searching for 1045 Carbon Steel centerless ground rod or bar, medium-carbon 1045 for shafts should be assessed for final diameter, straightness and surface finish independently. Review centerless grinding services for suitable bar stock and customer-supplied material.
1045 Carbon Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For 1045 Carbon Steel TG&P (TGP) or turned, ground and polished material, 1045 TG&P or turned-ground-polished bar is a common shafting product description; verify the final OD limits and length for the exact item quoted. Read about shafting and bar sourcing and bar polishing.
Centerless-ground finish and TG&P are not interchangeable specifications. Supply form, process sequence, dimensional tolerances, straightness, surface finish and availability are confirmed for each grade and RFQ. Request a grade-specific quote →
What to Include with an RFQ
- Finished OD and upper/lower tolerance limits; starting OD if processing existing stock
- Bar length or cut length, quantity and required length tolerance
- Condition, material standard, certifications and traceability needs
- Straightness, finish and other inspection criteria tied to an agreed test method
- Ship-to destination, packaging requirements, requested lead time and drawings where applicable
Submit your material RFQ here. Each quote is reviewed for material and processing feasibility.
