Common O1 Tool Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Material grade | O1 Tool Steel |
|---|---|
| Common tool-steel standard | ASTM A681 for alloy tool steels; AISI O1 (oil-hardening tool steel). |
| Supply / hardening condition | Typically supplied annealed for machining, then oil quenched and tempered for service hardness. |
| Order specifications | Grade, annealed/hardened state, hardness, final OD with tolerances, bar length, total quantity and inspection. |
Hardened O1 grinding requires burn control and dimensional stability checks.
Published specifications and heat-treatment routes are reference information, not a guarantee of a particular furnace or heat treatment at Precision Ground Rods. Confirm supplier capacity, finished hardness and qualification by quote.
OIL-HARDENING TOOL STEEL / MATERIAL PURCHASING
O1 is an oil-hardening cold-work tool steel selected for specific wear-resistant tooling.
Buying O1 Tool Steel Precision Ground Rod Stock
ASTM A681 or the drawing-specified tool steel standard. Finished rod stock should be ordered with the same rigor as the material itself. Include the actual stock form, the intended further processing and any certificate or test requirement; designation alone does not define finished dimensional performance.
Condition, Machinability and Hardness
Specify annealed stock versus final hardening and tempering treatment.
The specified heat-treatment path changes hardness, allowable grinding stock, dimensional stability and the quality checks that may be needed. State whether OD finishing is required before or after any aging, hardening or tempering process.
Possible O1 Tool Steel Applications
Gauge pins, tooling components and machined dies.
Applications shown here are examples of why a buyer may evaluate this steel, not a statement that every use is approved or that this product is in stock.
Production and Inspection Cautions
Final hardness and dimensional change after treatment require an allowance and inspection plan.
What Your Rod RFQ Should Specify
O1 Tool Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
O1 Tool Steel Centerless Ground Bar
When ordering O1 Tool Steel centerless ground rod or bar, annealed versus hardened O1 governs grind stock, achievable finish and dimensional control. Learn more about outside-diameter grinding requirements.
O1 Tool Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For O1 Tool Steel TG&P (TGP) and turned, ground and polished rod inquiries, O1 TG&P should be considered only after checking heat-treatment sequence and required shaft hardness. Review material supply and polishing.
A centerless-ground finish alone does not establish a complete TG&P processing route. Document material condition, OD tolerances, surface finish, straightness, length and inspection on the RFQ. Request pricing →
- Exact grade and material standard: identify product form, condition, chemistry/melt requirements and certification.
- Size: finished rod OD and upper/lower dimensional limits, incoming OD if customer-supplied.
- Geometry: length/cut list, straightness test span, roundness and surface-finish requirement.
- Quantity: units/pounds, delivery schedule and application constraints affecting acceptance.
Ground Rod Supply and Processing
Precision Ground Rods coordinates sourcing and finishing inquiries on a quotation basis. Our team reviews material sourcing and qualified outside-diameter grinding, straightening, polishing, cutting or packaging by grade, hardness, diameter and length.
