Common S7 Tool Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Material grade | S7 Tool Steel |
|---|---|
| Common tool-steel standard | ASTM A681 for S7 shock-resistant tool steel. |
| Supply / hardening condition | Typically annealed before machining, then hardened and tempered, using the procedure matched to section size. |
| Order specifications | Grade, annealed/hardened state, hardness, final OD with tolerances, bar length, total quantity and inspection. |
S7 impact-tool performance depends on engineered hardness/toughness balance.

SHOCK-RESISTANT TOOL STEEL / MATERIAL PURCHASING
S7 is a shock-resistant tool steel commonly considered for impact-loaded tools.
Buying S7 Tool Steel Precision Ground Rod Stock
ASTM A681 if required. Finished rod stock should be ordered with the same rigor as the material itself. Include the actual stock form, the intended further processing and any certificate or test requirement; designation alone does not define finished dimensional performance.
Condition, Machinability and Hardness
Specify hardness and heat-treatment condition after machining.
The specified heat-treatment path changes hardness, allowable grinding stock, dimensional stability and the quality checks that may be needed. State whether OD finishing is required before or after any aging, hardening or tempering process.
Possible S7 Tool Steel Applications
Impact punches, tool guides and fixtures.
Applications shown here are examples of why a buyer may evaluate this steel, not a statement that every use is approved or that this product is in stock.
Production and Inspection Cautions
Part geometry and heat treatment determine whether shock resistance is preserved.
What Your Rod RFQ Should Specify
S7 Tool Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
S7 Tool Steel Centerless Ground Bar
When ordering S7 Tool Steel centerless ground rod or bar, shock-resistant S7 is offered in different conditions, so the grinding schedule must reflect the specified heat treatment. Learn more about outside-diameter grinding requirements.
S7 Tool Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For S7 Tool Steel TG&P (TGP) and turned, ground and polished rod inquiries, S7 TG&P requests should define the drawing tolerance, condition and finish; not every finished S7 rod uses all three steps. Review material supply and polishing.
A centerless-ground finish alone does not establish a complete TG&P processing route. Document material condition, OD tolerances, surface finish, straightness, length and inspection on the RFQ. Request pricing →
- Exact grade and material standard: identify product form, condition, chemistry/melt requirements and certification.
- Size: finished rod OD and upper/lower dimensional limits, incoming OD if customer-supplied.
- Geometry: length/cut list, straightness test span, roundness and surface-finish requirement.
- Quantity: units/pounds, delivery schedule and application constraints affecting acceptance.
Ground Rod Supply and Processing
Precision Ground Rods coordinates sourcing and finishing inquiries on a quotation basis. Our team reviews material sourcing and qualified outside-diameter grinding, straightening, polishing, cutting or packaging by grade, hardness, diameter and length.
