Common 8620 Alloy Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Grade | 8620 Alloy Steel |
|---|---|
| Common bar standards | ASTM A29 / ASTM A322 for alloy steel bar; ASTM A108 when delivered cold finished. |
| Heat-treatment condition | Annealed or normalized for machining; carburized, quenched and tempered to develop specified wear-resistant case when designed. |
| Rod dimensions | Finished OD and upper/lower limits; length, quantity, straightness, surface roughness and certs as required. |
Case depth/core hardness and final grinding stock require separate order details.
These are common references, not automatic certification/availability or an in-house heat-treatment claim. The order’s material specification, condition, outside processing if any, and acceptance requirements govern.
ALLOY, NICKEL & SPECIALTY STEELS / PRECISION ROD STOCK
Nickel-chromium-molybdenum carburizing alloy selected for components needing a hard case and tougher core.
8620 Alloy Steel Grade and Purchasing Standard
SAE/AISI 8620; confirm the required ASTM/AMS bar standard. Request a mill test report and condition certification whenever the material grade or final mechanical properties are critical. A ground rod’s dimensions and appearance do not establish metallurgical conformance.
Material Condition and Ground Finish
Give annealed/normalized condition, and distinguish pre- from post-carburizing grinding.
The manufacturing sequence may involve heat treatment, straightening and outside-diameter finishing. These steps should be planned around the material’s condition and the application’s surface/straightness requirements, especially for long slender parts.
Where 8620 Alloy Steel Ground Rods May Be Used
Gears, shafts and mechanical wear parts specified for case hardening.
The component’s design and acceptance standard must be used to establish whether the alloy is appropriate. These are application examples, not a representation that the supplier is approved for any specific regulated industry.
8620 Alloy Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
8620 Alloy Steel Centerless Ground Bar
For 8620 Alloy Steel centerless ground rod or bar, carburizing and case hardening can alter dimensions, so define when the OD is ground relative to thermal processing. See centerless grinding for diameter and finish considerations.
8620 Alloy Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For 8620 Alloy Steel TG&P (TGP) or turned, ground and polished bar, 8620 TG&P shafting must include the intended heat-treatment route and whether its final finish is needed before or after case treatment. See material sourcing and bar polishing options.
TG&P describes a full processing route, not merely a ground OD. Verify grade, condition, dimensional limits, bar length, finish, inspection and availability in a written quotation. Request pricing →
Engineering Considerations
Case depth, distortion and grinding after heat treatment must follow the component drawing.
Required Details for a Complete Rod Quote
- Alloy: full designation, standard and condition, plus any material test report or special examination requirements.
- Geometry: finished outside diameter, upper/lower limits, length, straightness with inspection span and surface roughness where specified.
- Processing: identify supply of finished rod stock versus grinding customer-owned material, heat-treatment sequence and protective handling.
- Production: quantity, release schedule, required delivery date and ship-to area.
Ask About Availability and Precision Processing
Precision Ground Rods coordinates sourcing and finishing inquiries on a quotation basis. We assess material availability and manufacturing suitability per order, including outside-diameter grinding, straightening, polishing and cut-to-length operations as appropriate.
