4130 & 4140 Chromoly Tube Grinding
Grade-specific precision OD finishing for chromium-molybdenum seamless mechanical tubing and suitable tubular shaft blanks.
PROCESS & MATERIAL SELECTION
What this grinding request involves
4130 and 4140 tubing are not the same alloy. They differ in carbon content, possible hardness and mechanical behavior. Buyers may specify a seamless ASTM A519 tubular product rather than solid 4130 or 4140 bar. When outside-diameter grinding is required, the purchased condition, hardness, stock allowance and tube support are especially important.
Applications and available processing routes are reviewed against your drawing. A page discussing a material or service does not promise stock availability, a universal tolerance, or acceptance of every tube geometry.
SUPPLY & PROCESSING
Before quoting
Identify the tube or bar construction, exact grade and starting condition. Specify the outside diameter before and after grinding, length, quantity, required surface finish, and straightness or concentricity requirements.
TOP GRADES & STANDARDS
Material grades, product specifications & heat treatment
Examples for purchasing discussion—not blanket claims of availability or certification. Verify the correct ASTM edition, form, ordered condition and mill test report.
| Grade / product | Relevant specification | Supplied / heat-treated condition | Grinding review |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4130 alloy mechanical tubing | ASTM A519/A519M | Normalized, annealed or Q&T if specified | Confirm starting wall and straightness |
| 4140 alloy mechanical tubing | ASTM A519/A519M | Annealed, normalized or Q&T if specified | Hardness affects grinding plan |
| 4142 chromium-molybdenum | ASTM A519 where certified | Condition per order | Do not substitute for 4140 without approval |
| 4340 nickel-chromium-molybdenum | ASTM A519 where certified | Annealed or Q&T where specified | Greater hardenability, check final hardness |
Material heat treatment, mechanical testing and pressure/structural suitability are governed by the original applicable standard and purchase requirements.
SUPPLIED CONDITION
Heat-treatment conditions to verify
Normalized 4130 is not equivalent to annealed 4130. Quenched-and-tempered (Q&T) 4140 can have substantially different hardness from annealed stock. Request the hardness range, tempering condition and material certificate, particularly if grinding follows heat treatment. No universal HRC or tensile value should be inferred from the grade designation alone.
If the drawing calls for hardness, tensile properties or treatment after grinding, include it explicitly in the RFQ. Finishing does not itself establish a new certified heat-treated condition.
COMMON RFQ FIELDS
Quote-ready information

- Support/span and surface-roughness requirements
ENGINEERING & PURCHASING QUESTIONS
Questions buyers ask
Can you grind 4140 quenched-and-tempered tubing?
It may be feasible, depending on hardness, tube geometry and required stock removal. Include the exact heat-treatment certification and quantity.
Is normalized 4130 the same as annealed 4130?
No. They are different heat-treatment conditions and cannot be assumed mechanically equivalent.
What is the advantage of a separate chromoly-tube quote?
The heat treatment, wall and diameter requirements can drive a different setup from a conventional solid bar.
QUOTE BY GRADE, SIZE & FINISH
Have a tube or oversized bar that needs OD grinding?
Send the material grade and product standard, incoming and finished dimensions, condition, wall or bore details where applicable, length, quantity and any surface, inspection or documentation requirements.
