Thin-Wall Tube OD Grinding Feasibility
A practical review of whether delicate tubing can meet an outside-diameter or surface-finish specification without distorting.
PROCESS & MATERIAL SELECTION
What this grinding request involves
Thin-wall tubing requires a different feasibility assessment from rigid solid bar. Grinding pressure can deform the wall or produce temporary ovality; elastic recovery after the wheel contact also matters. Some parts may need special support, fixturing or an alternative finishing method. This page explains what information helps us determine whether an OD grinding request can be accepted.
Applications and available processing routes are reviewed against your drawing. A page discussing a material or service does not promise stock availability, a universal tolerance, or acceptance of every tube geometry.
SUPPLY & PROCESSING
Before quoting
Identify the tube or bar construction, exact grade and starting condition. Specify the outside diameter before and after grinding, length, quantity, required surface finish, and straightness or concentricity requirements.
TOP GRADES & STANDARDS
Material grades, product specifications & heat treatment
Examples for purchasing discussion—not blanket claims of availability or certification. Verify the correct ASTM edition, form, ordered condition and mill test report.
| Grade / product | Relevant specification | Supplied / heat-treated condition | Grinding review |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304 / 316 / 316L seamless stainless | ASTM A511 / A269 as specified | Annealed / solution-treated product condition | Wall stiffness and surface-finish callout |
| 304 / 316 welded stainless | ASTM A554 as specified | As-welded, annealed or cold-reduced | Weld zone and distortion |
| 1020 / 1026 DOM | ASTM A513 Type 5 | As-drawn or stress-relieved as ordered | Elastic response after OD reduction |
| Nickel alloy heat-exchanger tube | ASTM B163 where applicable | Condition specified for UNS alloy | Pressure/service testing remains distinct |
| 625 nickel alloy seamless tube | ASTM B444 where applicable | Annealed Grade 1 or solution-annealed Grade 2 | Confirm minimum wall after finishing |
Material heat treatment, mechanical testing and pressure/structural suitability are governed by the original applicable standard and purchase requirements.
SUPPLIED CONDITION
Heat-treatment conditions to verify
A tube’s strength and springback depend on its material state and wall. Cold-worked DOM may respond differently from annealed stainless or solution-annealed nickel alloy. A temporary fixture or mandrel may help in some setups but is not a universal guarantee. We should confirm the minimum permitted wall, desired ovality and measurement method before offering any OD tolerance.
If the drawing calls for hardness, tensile properties or treatment after grinding, include it explicitly in the RFQ. Finishing does not itself establish a new certified heat-treated condition.
COMMON RFQ FIELDS

- Tube OD and ID at receipt and after finishing
- Minimum wall, eccentricity and required stock allowance
- Free-state versus supported roundness inspection
- Length, handling, cosmetic limits and allowable rework
ENGINEERING & PURCHASING QUESTIONS
Questions buyers ask
Can all thin-wall tubes be centerless ground?
No. Wall stiffness, diameter and setup limitations can make some projects infeasible. We review risk before confirming a process.
Does a support mandrel solve ovality?
Not always. A mandrel may help support some geometries, but the entire process and inspection method must be developed for the job.
How should wall thickness be specified?
Provide the minimum finished wall or an accepted nominal-plus-tolerance requirement; tube OD alone is not enough.
QUOTE BY GRADE, SIZE & FINISH
Have a tube or oversized bar that needs OD grinding?
Send the material grade and product standard, incoming and finished dimensions, condition, wall or bore details where applicable, length, quantity and any surface, inspection or documentation requirements.
