MATERIAL STANDARDS / HEAT-TREATMENT CONDITIONS
Common 304 Stainless Steel Specifications & Heat Treatment
| Grade | 304 Stainless Steel |
|---|---|
| Common bar specifications | ASTM A276 or ASTM A479 for bar, as the purchase specification requires; UNS S30400 (304) is different from UNS S30403 (304L). |
| Heat-treatment / supply condition | Typically solution annealed or supplied cold worked. Austenitic 304 is not hardened by conventional quench-and-temper treatment. |
| RFQ dimensions | Finished outside diameter, tolerance limits, length, quantity, straightness, surface finish and certification requirements. |
Specify 304 versus 304L, drawing standard, finished OD, and required surface condition.
Standards are common purchasing references, not universal material certifications or stock promises. Heat-treatment availability and any outsourced processing require written confirmation; Precision Ground Rods bar grinding and finishing do not constitute an in-house furnace heat-treatment claim.
Material Profile & Purchasing Specifications
304 is a widely specified austenitic stainless grade for machined components and general industrial service. Rod purchasing requires the correct grade/condition, an applicable bar standard and separate dimensional and finish requirements.
Grade and Purchasing Specifications
- Common designation: Type 304; UNS S30400; specify 304L separately if required
- Applicable bar specification: ASTM A276 or another drawing-specified standard, depending on product and intended use
- Common use: General stainless machined components, hardware and selected rods/shafts
- Buyer check: Differentiate 304 from 304L and 303; review welding and service exposure requirements with engineering
When 304 Makes Sense
304 may be specified when corrosion resistance and general fabrication requirements take priority over the high machinability of 303. Machining performance depends on material condition, tooling and process parameters. The website does not imply that 304 ground rods are suitable for every corrosive environment.
How 304, 304L and 303 Differ
304L has a lower-carbon specification than 304 and should not be silently substituted. For parts optimized primarily for machining, buyers also evaluate 303 stainless, but chemistry, corrosion and welding tradeoffs must be approved by design engineering. State the actual UNS designation on your purchase order.
Sizing, Grinding and Acceptance Criteria
The nominal rod size is not an inspection tolerance. Give the required finished outside diameter and explicit upper/lower limits; for precision rotating or supported parts, also define straightness by support span and measurement method, along with roundness and roughness if applicable. Availability and manufacturing feasibility must be checked for the exact grade, condition, diameter, length and quantity.
304 Stainless Steel Centerless Ground & TG&P Bar Options
304 Stainless Steel Centerless Ground Bar
If you are searching for 304 Stainless Steel centerless ground rod or bar, work hardening and the starting condition can affect grinding planning; define the final OD, length and required Ra. Review centerless grinding services for suitable bar stock and customer-supplied material.
304 Stainless Steel TG&P / Turned, Ground & Polished
For 304 Stainless Steel TG&P (TGP) or turned, ground and polished material, for 304 TG&P inquiries, specify whether 304 or 304L is required and verify condition, corrosion requirements and finish. Read about shafting and bar sourcing and bar polishing.
Centerless-ground finish and TG&P are not interchangeable specifications. Supply form, process sequence, dimensional tolerances, straightness, surface finish and availability are confirmed for each grade and RFQ. Request a grade-specific quote →
What to Include with an RFQ
- Finished OD and upper/lower tolerance limits; starting OD if processing existing stock
- Bar length or cut length, quantity and required length tolerance
- Condition, material standard, certifications and traceability needs
- Straightness, finish and other inspection criteria tied to an agreed test method
- Ship-to destination, packaging requirements, requested lead time and drawings where applicable
